We’ve been having movie night a lot at my house and have been watching a lot of Christmas movies.  My kids love Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas so I thought I would make a fun treat to eat. I surprised them and made them while they were at school.  They couldn’t wait to dig in!

Ingredients for popcorn balls

How to make Grinch popcorn balls

  • Melt the butter in a pot on the stove.
  • Pour in marshmallows and stir continuously until they’re melted.
  • Pop the popcorn in the microwave following the directions on the package and pour into large pot. Make sure to take out all the unpopped kernals.
  • Once the marshmallows are melted, pour over the popcorn and stir until well coated.
  • You’ll need to wait a few minutes until the popcorn has cooled to form your balls.  It will be extremely sticky and they won’t take shape.

While forming the balls, place the stick in the middle.

Make the hearts.  You can find these premade at some stores.  They only had zebra print ones when I went out, so I decided to make my own.  You’ll need a mold and melting chocolates.  You can find melting chocolates in practically any color you want.  I just melt mine in the microwave.  I got the mold at Michaels’s for $2.99.

Once they were melted, I put in a baggie and cut off the corner so I cold fill up the mold without making a mess. I popped them in the freezer for a few minutes until they hardened.

Here’s the finished hearts.  You can just pop them out of the mold.  We had extra and my kids have been sancking on them.

Next, coat the popcorn balls in the same melting chocolate, but green.  Melt it in the microwave and used a spoon to cover the popcorn balls.  This is where the stick comes in really handy.  I put these in the refrigerator so the chocolate would harden.

Use a tube of icing and just put a dab on it to hold the heart in place.
