I know the flu has been in the news a lot this year. We planned spring break trips when my kids were younger and we had to cancel 2 YEARS in a row because of the flu.
I started to get serious about not getting sick because I was NOT missing another spring break! I’m not a doctor, but since I’ve made a few changes my family has been pretty healthy.

We have been so busy lately because of all our many activities- football, lacrosse, soccer, cross country and wrestling. Basketball is right around the corner.
My daughter had been itching like crazy for OVER a month. I hadn’t changed any laundry detergent, soap, or shampoo. Maybe it was the cold weather?
We live in North Carolina and it really hadn’t been THAT cold. I was thinking of everything. She would be doing fine for a few days and then it would start back, but right when I thought about going to the doctor it would stop again. This time she had enough.
With the flu and strep that going around, the last thing I wanted to do was to go into a germ filled office. I thought this was the perfect opportunity to try out one of these online doctors you can Facetime because I preferred not to be around all those sick people and germs.
I’m always a little skeptical with things like this, but I wasn’t risking catching something and have I going around my family for the next month.
I’m so lucky that Amwell has given my readers a 50% coupon code off an urgent care visit to try it out for themselves. Just type in Amwell50 in the coupon box at the checkout. WOOHOO!
I downloaded the Amwell app on my phone and just typed in my info. It only took a second. I added my insurance info and it came back with my regular copay.
We did this at 7:30 AM, before school. I was in my pjs and she still made the bus and didn’t miss any school. Amwell doctors are available 24 hours a day.
We waited 4 minutes (maybe) for the doctor to connect. We talked about what was going on and he prescribed some lotion for her at our local pharmacy that I picked up an hour later.

UPDATE: I’ve used Amwell more than this one time! My son is a wrestler and he was having some skin issues so we connected with a doctor and got his rash cleared up.
You can see that my family is super busy and a sickness will put a major kink in our routine.
How to keep your kids from getting the flu
Have outside time No matter how cold it is, my kids play outside everyday. They bundle up and play basketball, ride bikes, walk the dog, do sidewalk chalk, the list is endless. I think the fresh air has a lot to do with staying healthy.
Get plenty of rest. This is pretty easy. If your kids are constantly worn out they will have a harder time fighting germs.
Say “NO” to sugar. If you notice a stuffy or runny nose or sore throat, do not give them anything with sugar. I had a chiropractor tell me this once and I started applying it and I think it really works. Your body just can’t heal as fast if you have a lot of sugar in your body. Viruses love it. Feed your children healthy snacks.
Hand washing I’ve heard people say that having some dirt and germs are good for you to build your immune system and I do believe that, but not when all the neighbors are home from school sick.
I’m definitely not hard core about it in the spring or summer but when school starts and winter comes I want to do what I can to protect them from viruses. When my kids get in the car, I hand them the hand sanitizer and when they get off the bus I send them straight to the bathroom to wash up.
Don’t be around sick people I know you can’t help it when your kids go to school, but you can avoid grocery stores, shopping carts, and shaking hands at church.
