Preparing for a Family Hike

My family loves to hike.  We live in North Carolina and are 2 hours from the Blue Ridge Parkway.  We have a lot of different options to choose from and we love to try new places to go.  My kids are 5, 7, and 10 and love to hike.  We like to drive up in the morning and we stay all day.  Most times we don’t get home until 9 or 10.  Since we are usually gone all day, I have to plan ahead and make sure we have everything we need.  I don’t like having to run out and buy things that I left at home.  Sometimes you just can’t make it to a store because it could take an hour to get down the mountain.  Here are some things I do to prepare.

Preparing for a Family Hike

1. Clothes–  I pack clothes and a lot of them!  I bring everyone a change of clothes.  You never know what’s going to happen.  I also bring their PJ’s to put on if I know we’re going to be getting home late.

2. Swimsuit-  I usually have my kids wear their swimsuits.  If we happen to me across any water, they are in it.  This way I don’t have to worry about their real clothes getting wet.

3. Shoes–  It hadn’t rained at my house in almost 2 weeks the last time I went hiking, but when we got up the mountain there was mud everywhere.  I was so glad the kids were wearing their old shoes.  I also bring a second pair for them, usually flip flops, to put on when we’re done.  If the shoes are muddy then they aren’t getting it all over my car.  It’s also nice when they are hot and just want to take them off.

4.  FOOD!  It seems like when we’re out of the house that all my family thinks about is food.  I make sure I have snacks and lunch items they love so they’ll have full bellies.  We want everyone in a good mood.  I also packed up my cooler with tons of water and then lunch stuff and snacks.  This time I got some Uncrustables (which my kids love) and Jif To Go Dippers from Walmart because it’s my “SNACKATION” Destination.  I knew we were planning this hiking trip and this would be super easy to just grab and throw into my bag and cooler.
