Vanilla buttercream frosting is perfect for any cake or cupcakes. This one is the recipe I use for almost all my cakes. It’s so yummy and fluffy!

Most the time I buy frosting from the tub at the grocery store because my kids bake a lot and it makes it easier for them. However, making it is so easy! Every time I make it, I wonder why I don’t make it more. It’s super simple and you probably have the ingredients in your pantry right now.
Vanilla Buttercream Frosting
Here are a couple of tips about making this frosting.
The first is that this recipe will do 24 cupcakes if you are adding a “normal” amount. That’s if you’re using a knife or one layer piped on. If you like the icing like a bakery puts it on (a lot), you’ll need to double the recipe. Also, if you are doing a layer cake, double it.
Do you add frosting to a cupcake or cake using a knife, then you can have the icing a little thicker. If you pipe it on, you’ll need it a tad thinner so you can squeeze it out of the bag. You can adjust this recipe, if needed, and add additional cream or milk to thin it out so it will pipe easier, just an additional tablespoon or two.
Other recipes that need this frosting I have (all eggless)
Here are some supplies I use and love.
- 12 piece icing tips
- Piping bags AND tips– This is if you want some piping bags too. I normally just use a baggie.
- KitchenAid Hand Mixer– I got this mixer as a wedding gift almost 20 years ago and it’s still going strong. I highly recommend it!
Can I freeze buttercream frosting?
Yes! I love that you can freeze this, just add it to a freezer baggie. When you’re ready to use it, place it in the refrigerator overnight so it can get soft and you’re ready to go.
One last thing…if you are looking for a chocolate buttercream frosting, I have that too!
Tips to make the best frosting
Tip 1
If frosting is too thick, you may add in additional cream or milk to thin it out a little.
Tip 2
If you like a lot of icing on your cupcakes (piled on top like a bakery), then you’ll need to double the recipe.
Tip 3
If you are doing a round, double-layer cake, you’ll need to double this recipe.
