If you’re a regular reader of my website, then you know I’ve been doing more and more food over the course of the last year. My husband and I talked and we decided to make a change in the way we eat. I felt the pantry was full of processed junk and I knew we needed to eat better, but instead of doing it all at once we have been gradually changing our eating and buying habits.
One way that I wanted to be healthy was to make more things from scratch. I’ve always made my bread in the bread maker but relied on many boxed items for quick dinners.
We’ve done well at some things and our grocery bill has actually gone down! However, some things you just can’t make from scratch all the time. I love homemade tortillas, but I can’t make them every week when we have tacos and then again when we have breakfast burritos.
Another is homemade biscuits! We love homemade biscuits, but with 3 busy kids, we just can’t make them when we’re rushing to school or church.
Immaculate Baking has a great line of organic (and some are gluten-free) doughs. They have pie crust, cinnamon rolls and biscuits. All of these are perfect for the holidays when you need to take a shortcut on some things. Think about all those pies you are going to make! My son’s favorite things for breakfast during the holidays are biscuits and gravy. That’s all he asks for, so I thought I would share it with you.
Kitchen tools I love that I use to make this classic southern breakfast.
Baking Sheet– I’ve had these exact pans for almost 20 years and I love them. They are big and perfect for baking.
Wooden Spoon with a flat top– I have tons of wooden spoons, but I love the one with the flat top so you can scrap the bottom of your pan and get off anything that’s stuck.
Grease Container– Some sausage has more grease than others. If yours has a lot and you need to drain it, this grease container is perfect.
Iron Skillet– Of course, you don’t need an iron skillet to make this recipe, but you can use it if you have one big enough.
Homemade Gravy and Biscuits
Ingredients for biscuits and gravy
Ground pork sausage– You can use your favorite brand, but I normally use Jimmy Dean mild flavor.
All purpose flour
Milk– I buy 1% milk and use that in my recipe. Skim, 2% and whole milk will work fine.
Salt and ground black pepper– The amount of black pepper you add to this recipe depends on how much you like it. I don’t like pepper that much, except in two recipes and that’s sausage gravy and cheese grits!
