Ok- I know this sounds like this weirdest name for a meal, but you will be so happy you tried it.

I don’t know about you but I’m am so tired of cooking and my kids are tired of all my recipes. They’ve been at home most of the past year and we are over it! Since we live in the south, I’ve always heard people talking about this meal before, but never had it. I thought I would try something new for the kids to eat. Chicken tenders are always a winner in my house.

South Carolina Bird Dog Recipe

With all the sports here all mixed up here in North Carolina, we are very busy right now. Football just ended and now my kids are doing wrestling, lacrosse, soccer and track going on at the same time. There is no way we’ll be able to have a family dinner for at least a month.

This is such a super simple lunch or dinner to make with ingredients you probably normally buy. My kids can even make this on their own, which they will because they loved this. I don’t usually eat honey mustard, but I felt that this helped everything come together and was delicious.

I’ve been buying the big Caesar salad from Costco lately and that’s a great help getting some healthy food with our meals. My kids love it and it’s perfect with this meal. We can eat from the same package for a few days and it’s great to throw into lunches too.

Ingredients for Southern Bird Dogs

Chicken tenders (chicken fingers)- I just use the normal Tyson brand I get from Costco and cook them in my air fryer. If you haven’t gotten an air fryer, then you need to get one right now. We use ours almost everyday to cook something!

Bacon– You can use your favorite bacon for this recipe and AGAIN…you need an air fryer to make it in. The clean up is super easy. You can also cook it in the oven.

Cheese– I used mild cheddar cheese and it tasted delicious. Make sure it’s shredded for quick melting.

Honey Mustard

Hot Dog Buns– I like the topped sliced ones best.

How to make South Carolina Bird Dogs

Step 1

Make breaded chicken tenders and bacon according to the directions on the package.

Step 2

Add the chicken to your bun and slide the slice of bacon on the side. Sprinkle with shredded cheese.

Step 3

Bake for 5 minutes or until the cheese melts and top with honey mustard.

Tip 1

You can make this into a bird dog sandwich also by using a bun and chicken pattie. You’ll want to add more slices of bacon too. Add the cheese on top and place in the oven. Add the honey mustard and lastly, place the top bun on the sandwich.
