Breastfeeding is a main concern for new moms and it’s one of the hardest parts. There are good times and bad times, but in the end, it's totally worth it.  People love to give advice for when the new baby comes home, but sometimes don't share the not so good parts.  Here's what no one tells you about breastfeeding.

What no one tells you about breastfeeding

Yes,

  • it’s hard at first.
  • you will probably do some stuff wrong. Don’t worry about it.
  • you WILL be sore. Even if you are doing everything right, you will be sore, no matter what.
  • the baby will cry and cry because they are hungry and you can’t get them latched on properly. Don’t give up.
  • you will worry if your baby is getting enough to eat and you will probably go to the Dr. just to get a weight check to make sure.
  • you WILL cry about it.
  • everyone does things different. Find what works for you.
  • you will be upset that you're the only one that can feed the baby and you need a break.
  • you will have to breastfeed in bathrooms, restaurants, cars, and dressing rooms.
  • everything you do revolves around your baby's eating schedule.
  • you will spend a lot of time pumping and then accidentally spill the milk.

But then…You will

  • finally get the hang of it.
  • figure our what works for you.
  • love the bonding time with your baby.
  • be happy that it’s time for baby to eat because you can sit down and rest.
  • be better rested; although, certainly not "well rested", since you won't be in the kitchen making a bottle in the middle of the night.
  • feel so accomplished and proud of yourself because you stuck with it.

  1. As an IBCLC I have helped many moms breastfeed. It is true that some moms have soreness with breastfeeding with the start of the latch. If the soreness lasts throughout the breastfeed, then there is something not right and the mama should seek professional help. There are women who can breastfeed pain free from the start! It is possible. I only share this because I want to give those who desire to breastfeed hope. Not everyone experiences pain. If there is pain that persists throughout the breastfeed, please seek help.

  2. Great tips that I will share with my daughters-in-law who are now in those sweet baby bearing years. Thanks, Holly!

  3. One of my greatest accomplishments in life...breastfeeding my 3 kids. I'm still going with #3 (almost 1). It has been a HUGE challenge with figuring out food allergies and tongue and lip ties. But we just keep going.

    1. I know! I felt the same way. I couldn't eat cucumbers for a long time and I had dozens from my garden and couldn't eat any because it gave the baby gas!

  4. Great post Holly! I'll be coming around to visit it again once my breastfeeding days come around

  5. I've been breastfeeding for 7 months... And I never got sore. The "no matter what" part is a little much. Even at the very beginning I never had any pain at all!! It's possible!

  6. I love this post! Breastfeeding is so hard, and I feel like I had no idea before I had my baby! So glad we have a community of other breastfeeders who know what it's like!

    Love this post!

  7. I pumped all over town! The weirdest place was in a rented jeep in front of a volcano! Beats on an airplane seat, bathrooms, backseat of a car behind a clueless driver etc etc!

  8. My last baby had a favorite side and when he was tied and wanted to nurse to sleep, he would refuse to nurse from the other.
