If you’re like me, you’re always trying to find ways to spend time with your boys. They are 7 and 9 and are never sitting still. They are always playing with the neighbors, riding their bikes, throwing the baseball in the street, or playing soldiers in the woods. I feel like I never see them except when I’m telling them to get in the shower and tucking them in. They are always running out the door.
I found a way that I can spend some time with them with no interruptions! It’s so easy. We’ve been going on walks! I have been getting into a new exercise routine and have been walking in the mornings with my daughter when the boys go off to school. A few nights last week, I mentioned it to the boys and they were so excited to go. We went after my daughter was in bed so it was just me and my 2 boys.
We’ve been almost every night this week too. Many times they ride their skateboards or bikes, but we’ve still been able to talk with no interruptions from friends, TV, phones, or computers. We’ve held hands and talked about our day and how practice went. I’ve learned about what’s been getting on their nerves and funny stories from school that I would have missed if I hadn’t been on the walk. I would have been too busy cleaning the kitchen after dinner or on my phone checking my email.
Nightly walks may not work for your family, but there is something that WILL work. I’m determined to keep up with this routine all summer and really take the time to get to know my boys better. I know they won’t want to go every night, but if I keep asking they will keep looking forward to our nightly walks.

something so simple can be so effective on really connecting. My son is also 9 and I think this would be perfect for us. Actually, I've been taking my 5 year old because she WANTS to go with Mommy on my walks whereas my son is, like you said, out with his friends too. It is nice to be able to really connect.
